Mornings

Every morning, after waking up, my two sons and me will sit at the kitchen table and eat breakfast. We generally sit silently until the gummy bear vitamins we take kick in (yes…I did say “we” take them!). Usually the morning conversation goes something like this:

Gio: Daaadee! Blah blah blah blah blah blah.

Me: Yes, I do agree that the economy is really bad for a lot of people. But what can we do?

Gio: Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.

Elijah: Daaaad! That’s not what Gio said.

Me: How do you know?

Elijah: Because he’s my brother.

Gio: Blah blah blah blah blah blah.

Me: See, Elijah! I told you that’s not what he meant.

Gio: Yeah!

Me: So anyways, Gio, in addition to that we need to really consider what type of career you’re planning on having.

Gio: Huh?!?

Me: Yes…we need to know right away that way I can make plans on how you’re going to take care of me in my old age.

Elijah: Daaaaad! You’re not going get old!

Me: That’s not what my doctor says.

Elijah: Dad, you’re still going to have to play football with me so you can’t get old.

Me: Okay. But what if I can’t help it?

Gio: Blah blah blah blah blah blah. Noooooo!

That’s our morning conversation. It’s one of the best conversations of my day. To sit with these two Sons of mine is a treat in itself. But to hear them call me “Dad”, “Daddy”, “Daaaad” is even more special. What a wonderful gift adoption is! See what Paul the apostle says about this:

Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” (Galatians 4:6)

For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!” (Romans 8:15)

It’s great to know that we can call God our Father.
